1/9 Newsletter

January 9, 2020

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a fun Christmas break.

Students will be participating in a special kind of science fair called the Invention Convention. The mission of the Invention Convention is to inspire curiosity, critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills in our students.

Students will invent a new product or develop a new method for doing something. Instructions and a grading rubric have been handed out in class. A copy is also available on this 5B website. Inventions are due Friday, January 24th. They will be displayed in the hallway for Catholic Schools Week.

Happy New Year, and welcome back!  We began our first chapter of the sixth grade book on Monday.  Our first chapter is on rates and ratios.  The students have their new books, and assignments will typically be in this book.  Remember you can look online to the math website, math.holyrosaryws.org, to see the pages and problems we are doing nightly.  Next week, the students will get their usernames and passwords to the online book so that they can look up the ebook online.

Reading: We will begin reading Number the Stars, a historical fiction novel by Lois Lowry. It is about the escape of a Jewish family from Copenhagen, Denmark, during World War II. Students will be participating in Literature Circles during this unit, taking turns leading their group.  Much of the reading is expected to be completed at home!

Social Studies: We are beginning Chapter 7, Comparing the Colonies. We are working in groups to create “billboard” advertisements to lure people from England to move to the colonies. Each colony group will make a presentation to go with their billboard. The test for this Chapter will be on 1/23. A study guide will go out one week prior to the test.

Students will be able to:

  • Distinguish among New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies
  • Work collaboratively to create a billboard to promotes-and present an ad campaign
  • List key features of the colonies of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Georgia.

Science: Students will look at microbes (volvox, blepharisma, and vinegar eels) under the microscope. They will learn the characteristics of each.

Students will take a quiz on these organisms based on the notes they have taken in class next Friday, January 17th.

Religion: Students will explore God’s healing power in the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. They will take a short quiz on Chapter 15, Forgiveness and Healing, next Wednesday.

Language Arts: Lesson 7 Spelling Quiz is tomorrow on Friday, January 10th. Words can be found on my website: https://6b.holyrosaryws.org/5th-la/.  Next week, we begin Lesson 8 and there will be a spelling and grammar quiz, on conjunctions, for this lesson on Friday, January 17th. Back to back quiz weeks because we will begin to dedicate time the following week to prepare for the school Spelling Bee, January 30th.

Have a great week!
