Mrs. Heuer

This week we completed our fourth unit on multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.  Next week, we will continue our fifth and final unit on measurement.  We will work with both the U.S. Customary and metric systems of measurement.  We will complete this unit right before the Christmas break, setting us up to begin our 6th grade material in January.

Religion:   Students begin Chapter 15, Forgiveness and Healing. Students will learn about the parts, signs and effects of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Students will also compare the faith journey of the two sons in the parable of the lost son (Luke 15: 11-32).

Reading: Reading: 5th Graders have been focusing intently this week on ‘Analyzing Text’. To do this, we have been practicing the strategy called ‘Close Reading’ which involves reading the text through 3 times, each time with a different focus. Students are improving their skills of selective highlighting and note-taking to improve comprehension. Next week we will focus on oral reading fluency through the very enjoyable process of Reader’s Theater.

Science:  Students will take a short quiz on Lesson 4, classifying plants, next Tuesday. Students will begin a research-based science unit called Microworlds. In this unit, students will learn to use their powers of observation with the help of magnifying lenses and microscopes to see familiar things in a new way. They are also introduced to a fascinating new world-the cellular structure of living organisms.

Language Arts: Our Lesson 6 Spelling Quiz will be NEXT Friday, December 13th, and no challenge words are included. Students will take a practice quiz tomorrow to gauge what they will need to study for next week. We are also working on vivid action verbs, main verbs vs helping. Ask your child about the action verb rap 🙂 Words can be found on my website: https://6b.holyrosaryws.org/5th-la/.

Social Studies: This week students received information on the 50 States test and State Capitals tests, which will be at the end of the year in late, May. The States test will have a matching format. The State names will be given and they will need to place them in the correct location on the map. The Capitals test will be multiple choice. I will give a state and then they will need to choose the correct capital from a short list of options. They received a map in class and have worked to complete it by writing the state name in the location on the map. In class they used the map of the United States in the back of their Social Studies Text book. I have also pushed out several on-line practice web sites on the Materials section of my Social Studies Google Classroom. They can use that resource as well to practice as well.

We are also going to dive into Chapter 6 in our book. In this chapter we will be learning about three English Settlements. Students will be preparing “Act- it-Outs” and bring to life the experiences of the settlers from Jamestown, Roanoke and Plymouth. They will be working in small groups to answer a list of interview questions as well as completing the Interactive Notebook notes in class. We will be working on this during class times next week. The Act it outs will be on Friday 12/13. The test for this chapter will be on 12/19. A study guide will be on Google Classroom as well as a hard copy for everyone one week prior to the test.

Have a great weekend!

Mr. Schreck
