Next week we will be finishing out our third 5th grade unit: adding and subtracting fractions.  The students have been working with like and unlike fractions, mixed numbers, reducing their answers, and applying the skills to problem solving.  We will have a unit test after two days of review.  Our next unit will be multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.  One thing that we are working on is doing your best work each night.  Each nightly HW is a way to feel more prepared for the test.

Religion: Students have been searching the Bible for powerful signs of God’s presence. They have discussed how to become more aware of the signs God sends us. Students will also learn about the life of St. Benedict. He created a plan called the Rule of Saint Benedict that balances prayer, study, work and rest.

Social Studies: Next week we will begin Chapter 5, Routes of Exploration to the New World. In this chapter we will take a closer look at 8 European explorers. Students will gather information about these explorers using a matrix. This matrix will help them to organize the information we are learning.

Science: Students begin a new unit in Life Science. Students will discover the main parts and functions of animal cells. They will compare and contrast these parts (organelles) with plant cells. Students will be able to identify similar cells that make up tissue, and how different kinds of tissue work together to make up an organ. Looking ahead, students will take a quiz from their Science textbook on Lesson 1 (Is it Living?) Friday, Nov. 8th. They will complete a study guide to help them prepare.

Language Arts:  Students will have their Spelling Quiz on November 1st on the Lesson 4 words, including challenge words (25 total). Words can be found on my website: https://6b.holyrosaryws.org/5th-la/.  We will continue to practice M.L.A. format as we begin organizing our Opinion Piece Paper by using graphic organizers. Students will clearly express an opinion and support their point of view with reasons and information. The students will be sharing this assignment during conferences.

Reading: we continue in Hatchet. Students should have finished reading Ch. 12 by Monday. We’ve been working on the author’s use of Figurative Language, and will continue looking at that next week. Students seem to really been enjoying this book!

Have a great week!
